“There are 3.3 billion girls and women.  What’s your number? Get your unique, and randomly generated number, and be a voice to empower girls and women all over the world.”

I received some emails asking me why I posted random numbers on my Facebook profile and Twitter page. For the past few weeks, people all over the world have been posting random numbers. These posts aren’t a random occurrence; they definitely mean something and you can join in on this awesome grassroots initiative too.

So, what are these numbers? They are from the ground-breaking initiative, The G(irls)20 Summit, created by the Belinda Stronach Foundation. On June 26-27, 2010, there will be a G20 Summit where G20 leaders will gather in Toronto to discuss measures to promote global financial stability and ways to achieve a sustainable economic growth and development. The G(irls)20 Summit, scheduled for June 16-18, 2010, will precede the official G20 Summit in Toronto this year. The Republic of Korea, G20 Chair for 2010, will host the fifth summit in November in Seoul.

Twenty girls (between the ages of 18-20) from the G20 countries will come together on June 16th to discuss and promote grassroots ideas on how to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which are eight goals created to address the social inequalities women and girls endure throughout the world. You can find a detailed list of the goals on Beacause I’m a Girl blog.

“If you are a passionate, forward-thinking, solution-oriented girl between the ages of 18-20 from a G20 country you could be one of the G(irls) 20 Summit change makers. Apply to attend the G(irls)20 Summit and be a voice representing the 3.3 billion girls and women around the world.”

The G(irls)20 Summit  needs your ideas! You can get involved in many ways:

  • Get your number here and actively promote it via Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Join the Girls20Summit fan page on Facebook & post your number!
  • Follow @girls20summit on Twitter and retweet their posts
  • Have an idea for change? Be part of the MDGs discussion by visiting the Change Room!
  • Canadian designer Tu Ly (designer of the Olympic red mittens) has designed a tee for this campaign.  Place your order!

It only takes one girl to change the world, but why stop at one, when we can have 3.3 billion girls and women to come together and help? Let’s bring attention to these girls and women around the world together. WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER?
