Something huge happened yesterday: Americans woke up this morning surrounded by a new political world. President Obama said in a statement after the vote yesterday, “This is what change looks like.” He’s right – this is the most significant congressional vote in the last four decades. Before the vote, one side of the aisle gave a standing ovation to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) while the other side stayed silent.

“It is with great humility and with great pride that we tonight will make history for our country and progress for the American people,” said Pelosi. “Just think–we will be joining those who established Social Security, Medicare, and now tonight, health care for all Americans.”

Not only did this vote change America’s health care system, it changed the balance of America’s political power too. Yes, some will be taxed heavily on the excellent health benefits provided through the union, but we should be happy about it – we’re helping 32 million who never had health coverage before. Being a Medicare & Retirement specialist for the past two and a half years of my career with SSA, I’m interested in seeing how this will play out in the near future.
