</a><span style="color: #e618b0;"><em>I took this GORGEOUS picture during a road trip from GA to CA back in August 2008. I think this was taken when I was passing through AZ. Doesn&#8217;t it just make you smile and want to touch the sky? </em></span></p>
<h1><em><span style="color: #ea1483;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Discovery</span></span></em></h1>
<p>I found an old picture. I&#8217;ve never shown it to anyone except to my family and best friends. This picture takes me back to my childhood binoculars, stuffed animal explorer friend “Teddy” who I took with me to make discoveries (he sits on my bookshelf to this day), ingenious fictional stories I used tell the neighborhood kids, and more – it reminds me to never forget the importance of youth and aspirations.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-559" title="Special Agent Training Class Picture" src="http://www.angellicayi.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Untitled-2.jpg" alt="" width="259" height="359" /><br />
<em><span style="color: #e618b0;">Here I am with my fellow Special Agent trainees. Six out of 50 trainees in my class were females, including me. Imagine being the girliest and youngest female agent in a class full of Type-A personalities. Best. Experience. Ever.<br />
</span></em></p>
<p>Do you ever feel so strong about something that you’ll do anything in order to make it yours? I remember sitting on the couch with my baby brother and watching <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088559/" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.imdb.com/title/tt0088559/?referer=');">MacGyver</a> when I was a kid. MacGyver was my idol – resourceful, optimistic, intelligent, and so sweet. Seriously, I considered marrying him without even thinking twice about our colossal age difference. Everyday, he was living a life of action, saving people, inventing, traveling, investigating, and making a positive change for everyone. Not only was I in love with his lifestyle and his encouraging ways, I also wanted to be him.</p>
<p>So, I did a little investigation myself: Who was MacGyver? -He was a Secret Agent. I had no idea what that meant since I was only a child. Becoming a <a title="Special Agent" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_agent" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_agent?referer=');">Special Agent </a>is what I aimed for all my life. Nothing else mattered; everything else was a distraction. My brother and I played “investigators and criminals” with the neighborhood kids quite often until the sun went down. Since we were children, I honestly believed that I was as an investigator, and in 2006, when I received an “unknown” call asking me for an answer of whether or not I could fly out to the east coast for the six-month training to become a Special Agent, I almost died. It was the moment I was waiting for all my life and everything made sense to me after that – go after dreams, make goals and have a plan, and always do the best I can.</p>
<p>Being ambitious doesn’t mean being competitive with others; it means being competitive with myself. I am constantly seeking out ways on how I can help others. That’s why I give myself such a hard time if I fail at something, but the reality is if I failed, then I’ve lived. Remember what <a title="Mother Teresa" href="http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/1979/teresa-bio.html" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/1979/teresa-bio.html?referer=');">Mother Teresa</a> said? “Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest you.” Very true.</p>
<p>So, what’s the point of my story? &#8211; Go after that burning desire in your life because we need more people in this world who love what they do. If you reach a goal in life and it wasn’t all what you expected it to be, then move onto the next because life is about exploration. Set no limits and take the risk. <a title="Bear Grylls" href="http://www.beargrylls.com/biography.html" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.beargrylls.com/biography.html?referer=');">Bear Grylls</a> said it best when he <a title="Bear Grylls - Twitter Quote" href="http://twitter.com/#!/BearGrylls/status/9842347507" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/twitter.com/_/BearGrylls/status/9842347507?referer=');">tweeted</a>, “If you risk nothing you gain nothing.” LOVE IT!!! LIVE IT!</p>

<p>Personally, yesterday was the perfect time for <a title="Kanye West" href="http://www.kanyewest.com" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.kanyewest.com?referer=');">Kanye </a>to come out with his fifth album, <a title="iTunes - my beautiful dark twisted" href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/my-beautiful-dark-twisted/id403837134" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/itunes.apple.com/us/album/my-beautiful-dark-twisted/id403837134?referer=');"><em>My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy</em></a> (November 22, 2010). Something about ambitious people makes me smile. I’m an extremely driven person and if you know me, then you know what I thrive on most &#8211; the attention, appreciation, and awards for accomplishments in life that were earned through hard work and dedication. I expect recognition and love praises. Some people disparage me and judge me as &#8220;too confident.&#8221; What can I say? I’m proud of myself and thankful for the people who have been there for me throughout good and bad times. Understanding there’s a fine line between arrogance and confidence, I hold all actions accountable. If you put everything you’ve got on the front line for something that you desire so bad, and you do everything you can in your power that results in you finally getting where you want to be, then who’s the one to judge? No one, but you. <span id="more-540"></span>Everyone will talk, but don&#8217;t allow that to affect you. Always do your best and let yourself shine. This is what I tell myself in order to stay grounded because most of the time, I just don’t understand why so much hate exists. I can see, feel, and hear the jealously around me. I’ll be frank with you: last Sunday, I had a breakdown. Although this rarely happens to me because I despise being pitied, it happens, and it’s obvious that something has been bothering me deep down inside that I’ve been hiding from everyone. I’m not perfect, but I do my best. I truly care about the public and for their best interest, yet there are people who want to stop me. Surprise, I have bad news to the people who aim to prevent me from going after my dreams: you&#8217;re only helping me push myself harder.</p>
<p>In Track 7, “So Appalled,” Pusha T raps, “Success is what you make it.” He’s right. No matter how much people want to step on me and prevent me from achieving my dreams, it’s not going to happen because I grew up surrounded by competition. You will not believe what someone, who will remain unnamed, said to me last week: “Angellica, you are too ambitious. If you dream this big everyday, then you’re not going to get far and you will burn a lot of bridges along the way.” Really? Then, let there be fire because no one can be “<em>too ambitious</em>” in life. I am feeling a lot of emotions lately and Kanye&#8217;s new album has truly touched me. Here’s why the much anticipated <em>My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy</em> is genius <em>–</em> the emotions are real. You empathize with the artist. This is the power of good music.</p>
<p>Kanye’s music portrays <strong>ambition</strong> without hiding his true emotions. <em>My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy</em> is definitely the most resonate, ambitious mainstream rap album ever created. He shows us that it is ok to let out your emotions occasionally. Drake seems to follow his style and approach to music as well. <em><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Kanye, you are a <strong>musical mastermind</strong> and a <strong>visionary</strong>. We forgive you. <span style="color: #e443b7;">No one is perfect.</span></span></em> Rap-up.com did a great job putting together a list on how critics respond to Kanye&#8217;s new album <a title="Rap-up.com" href="http://www.rap-up.com/2010/11/22/review-roundup-kanye-west-my-beautiful-dark-twisted-fantasy/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.rap-up.com/2010/11/22/review-roundup-kanye-west-my-beautiful-dark-twisted-fantasy/?referer=');">here</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p><em><a href="http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/reviews/2010-11-22-kanyereview22_ST_N.htm" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.usatoday.com/life/music/reviews/2010-11-22-kanyereview22_ST_N.htm?referer=');">USA Today</a></em>: The audacious new <em>My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy</em> opens a window into an ego that is often tripping, thus exposing the insecurities and foibles that fuel West’s boundless creativity and grandiose ambitions. <strong>4 out of 4</strong></p>
<p><em><a href="http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20442911,00.html" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.ew.com/ew/article/0_20442911_00.html?referer=');">Entertainment Weekly</a></em>: West may be obnoxious, but at least he’s interested in confronting those aspects of his identity through his music. Few stars of comparable wattage would dare do the same. <strong>A</strong></p>
<p><em><a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/music/reviews/album/45342/232350" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.rollingstone.com/music/reviews/album/45342/232350?referer=');">Rolling Stone</a></em>: Nobody else is making music this daring and weird, from the spooky space funk of “Gorgeous” to the King Crimson-biting “Power” to the paranoid staccato strings of “Monster.” <strong>5 out of 5</strong></p>
<p><em><a href="http://www.spin.com/reviews/kanye-west-my-beautiful-dark-twisted-fantasy-roc-fella" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.spin.com/reviews/kanye-west-my-beautiful-dark-twisted-fantasy-roc-fella?referer=');">SPIN</a></em>: It’s a sinister, orchestral, hugely grandiose affair that owes as much to the artist’s self-aggrandizing ego as to the voracious id that would destroy it publicly. <strong>9 out of 10</strong></p>
<p><em><a href="http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,2031708,00.html" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.time.com/time/arts/article/0_8599_2031708_00.html?referer=');">TIME</a></em>: <em>My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy</em>, his most extravagant work, is hip-hop’s version of grand opera: a congested, constantly bustling disc stuffed with oversized drama, guest rappers, insanely eclectic samples, and backup vocals from a list of headliners that includes Alicia Keys, Elton John, and Fergie.</p>
<p><em><a href="http://leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/turn_it_up/2010/11/album-review-kanye-west-my-beautiful-dark-twisted-fantasy.html" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/turn_it_up/2010/11/album-review-kanye-west-my-beautiful-dark-twisted-fantasy.html?referer=');">Chicago Tribune</a></em>: What makes him so off-putting—his almost pathological allegiance to expressing his emotions, unfiltered—is also what makes him so compelling, a curious mix of bravado and vulnerability. But that same transparency makes <em>My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy</em> a terrific album. <strong>3.5 out of 4</strong></p>
<p><em><a href="http://blogs.suntimes.com/music/2010/11/cd_review_kanye_west_my_beauti.html" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/blogs.suntimes.com/music/2010/11/cd_review_kanye_west_my_beauti.html?referer=');">Chicago Sun-Times</a></em>: That he’s rapping again, after suffering such undue abuse for his “singing” on his last album, <em>808s and Heartbreak</em>, is cause for celebration not just because his vocalizing isn’t always spot-on but because his mouth is on fire again, throwing out genius rhymes and typically radical claims. <strong>4 out of 4</strong></p>
<p><em><a href="http://www.boston.com/ae/music/cd_reviews/articles/2010/11/21/kanyes_beautiful_dark_twisted_fantasy_may_be_his_clearest_vision_yet/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.boston.com/ae/music/cd_reviews/articles/2010/11/21/kanyes_beautiful_dark_twisted_fantasy_may_be_his_clearest_vision_yet/?referer=');">The Boston Globe</a></em>: Love it or hate it—and that’s probably the only range of reactions it will elicit—<em>My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy</em> lives up to its name. More than that, though, it’s a welcome reminder that once you settle West’s scores—and they number plenty these days—he’s a visionary and not just the jerk who interrupted Taylor Swift and pouted over his recent “Today” interview with Matt Lauer.</p>
<p><em><a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/19/AR2010111903704.html" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/19/AR2010111903704.html?referer=');">The Washington Post</a></em>: And that’s just a freckle of the petulant genius that coats every inch of <em>My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy</em>, easily the most thrilling album of 2010 and the best of West’s career. The weird, wordy title is the only thing about this opus that he’ll live to regret—the rest is pure pop bravura, with hip-hop’s biggest ego torquing self-obsession into unapologetic new shapes.</p></blockquote>
<p>Download <em>My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy</em> on iTunes, or purchase it on <a title="Amazon - Kanye West 2010" href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004BSIJ9Q/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&amp;pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&amp;pf_rd_t=201&amp;pf_rd_i=B003X2O6KW&amp;pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;pf_rd_r=19RS589R370EYAWHM7M5" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004BSIJ9Q/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851_amp_pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1_amp_pf_rd_t=201_amp_pf_rd_i=B003X2O6KW_amp_pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER_amp_pf_rd_r=19RS589R370EYAWHM7M5&amp;referer=');">Amazon </a>because this epic album is worth your money. Show your love and support! I haven&#8217;t been able to take my headphones off. Remember to sparkle and be proud of it. No one should take the spotlight away from you. :)</p>

<p>On the night of August 6th (after an entire week off from work and graduate school), I came home with a crown and two sashes from the <a title="Miss Asian America - 2010 Results" href="http://missasianamerica.com/MAAP_10-Results.html" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/missasianamerica.com/MAAP_10-Results.html?referer=');">25th Annual Miss Asian America Pageant</a>. I made it on the royal court and I can assure you that it take a lot of time, effort, and skill. I would have never known that a beauty pageant took this much dedication and commitment! There were countless public speaking training sessions, dance practices, press conferences, sponsorship and charity events, political fundraisers, photo shoots, scheduled public appearances, interviews with news reporters, and many more. It takes a lot of ambition for an Asian American woman to dedicate a whole week out of school or work to prepare for this type of unconventional beauty pageant- a pageant representing the importance of individuality, culture, and leadership. Hence, I applaud you, Miss Asian America pageant contestants, for your diligence and positive attitude- you are all leaders, especially for all the young Asian American girls who are in search of confident and driven exemplars. You can see pictures of all the gorgeous ladies at <a title="Miss Asian America - David Yu Photos" href="http://www.pbase.com/davidyuweb/miss_asian_america_2010&amp;page=all" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.pbase.com/davidyuweb/miss_asian_america_2010_amp_page=all?referer=');">David Yu&#8217;s website here</a>.</p>
<p>As Miss. Scholastic and Miss. Popularity 2010-2011, I have attended over 11 community service events in less than two months. Volunteering once or twice a week for a three to seven hour period is a huge commitment, but it is an incredible and rewarding experience. I am lucky to have the opportunity to be part of such a fantastic organization. <span id="more-501"></span><strong>Just to name a few events I participated in:</strong></p>

<p>Many of my friends have been asking me how I’m able to manage my time while working and attending classes. Write everything down on your agenda book or piece of paper with dates, put it in your Google calendar or calendar you can look up online at any time, and sync that with your mobile phone calendar. Three places to look, no excuse to forget. Managing time is a skill, especially if you have a full plate of meetings, classes, events, etc. Include some time for you because it’s important to reenergize, eat right and don’t skip meals, and get enough rest. Focus on YOU first before saving the world. There&#8217;s a lot happening &#8211; I&#8217;ll be sure to keep you posted. Remember: La Dolce Vita. &lt;3</p>

&#8220;There are 3.3 billion girls and women.  <a title="THE G(irls)20 Summit" href="http://www.girlsandwomen.com/whats_your_number-7.html" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.girlsandwomen.com/whats_your_number-7.html?referer=');">What’s your number?</a> Get your unique, and randomly generated number, and be a voice to empower girls and women all over the world.&#8221;</p>
<p>I received some emails asking me why I posted random numbers on my Facebook profile and Twitter page. For the past few weeks, people all over the world have been posting random numbers. These posts aren&#8217;t a random occurrence; they definitely mean something and you can join in on this awesome grassroots initiative too.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.girlsandwomen.com/shop-4.html" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.girlsandwomen.com/shop-4.html?referer=');"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-473" title="THE G(irls)20 SUMMIT" src="http://www.angellicayi.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/girls_and_women.bmp" alt="" /></a><br />
So, what are these numbers? They are from the ground-breaking initiative, The G(irls)20 Summit, created by the <a title="Belinda Stronach Foundation" href="http://www.tbsf.ca/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.tbsf.ca/?referer=');">Belinda Stronach Foundation</a>. On June 26-27, 2010, there will be a <a title="G20 Summit (Official)" href="http://g20.gc.ca/toronto-summit/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/g20.gc.ca/toronto-summit/?referer=');">G20 Summit </a>where G20 leaders will gather in Toronto to discuss measures to promote global financial stability and ways to achieve a sustainable economic growth and development. <p>Last week, my mom emailed me an article from <a title="Korea Times" href="www.koreatimes.co.kr/" target="_blank">The Korea Times</a>. She knows how much I love leadership, especially when women’s rights and human rights are involved. I’ve been meaning to write about this Women’s conference awhile ago, but didn’t get the chance to do so until today. It is an article about the conference on empowering women across the globe, “Women in the World Summit,” which was held at a theater in Manhattan over the weekend beginning March 12th through March 14th.</p>
<p>As <a title="HuffingtonPost - Women in the World Summit 2010" href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/15/women-in-the-world-storie_n_498842.html" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/15/women-in-the-world-storie_n_498842.html?referer=');">Jocelyn Noveck’s </a>Huffington Post article shares, there were “prominent women” from all around the world, including:<em> </em></p>
<blockquote><p><em>A secretary of state. A top presidential adviser. An iconic film star. Fashion designers, TV anchors, and a queen… But they weren’t the stars of the event. It was the women&#8217;s rights and human rights activists…who drew the cheers, and sometimes tears, at &#8220;Women in the World: Stories and Solutions,&#8221; a gathering organized by </em><a title="The Daily Beast - Women in the World Summit 2010" href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsmaker/women-in-the-world/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.thedailybeast.com/newsmaker/women-in-the-world/?referer=');"><em>Tina Brown, editor of The Daily Beast Web site</em></a><em>, as they talked about how women have progressed and what remains to be done.</em></p></blockquote>
<p><span id="more-444"></span>Queen Rania of Jordan, for example, spoke to Katie Couric about empowering young girls with education. For those of you who don’t already know, Queen Rania promotes education actively in her own country. As reported by the <a title="Queen Rania" href="http://www.queenrania.jo/media/news/queen-rania-advocates-girl%E2%80%99s-education-tina-brown%E2%80%99s-women-world-summit-%E2%80%9Ceducation-really-" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.queenrania.jo/media/news/queen-rania-advocates-girl_E2_80_99s-education-tina-brown_E2_80_99s-women-world-summit-_E2_80_9Ceducation-really-?referer=');">Office of Her Majesty, Press Department in New York</a>, she said, “Educating a girl is probably the highest returning investment that a country can make.”</p>
<p>On the evening of March 12th, <a title="Secretary of State" href="http://www.state.gov/secretary/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.state.gov/secretary/?referer=');">U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton </a>opened the conference. After the audience watched a clip from her famous speech regarding “Women’s rights are human rights” at the 1995’s <a title="United Nations - Women Watch" href="http://www.un.org/womenwatch/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.un.org/womenwatch/?referer=');">United Nations women’s conference</a> in Beijing, <a title="Hillary Clinton - Women in the World Summit 2010" href="http://newsblaze.com/story/20100315170355stat.nb/topstory.html" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/newsblaze.com/story/20100315170355stat.nb/topstory.html?referer=');">Clinton joked</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>I am thrilled that we are marking this 15th anniversary of the Fourth United Nations Conference on Women in Beijing. Fifteen years and many hairstyles ago &#8211; (laughter) &#8211; we have seen a lot of progress. (Laughter, applause.) And on behalf of women as well. (Laughter.)</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Former U.S. Secretary of State <a title="Madeleine Albright" href="http://secretary.state.gov/www/albright/albright.html" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/secretary.state.gov/www/albright/albright.html?referer=');">Madeleine Albright </a>was also at the conference and was <a title="The Daily Beast - Women in the World Summit 2010" href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-03-09/women-in-the-world-interview-madeleine-k-albright/?obref=obinsite" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-03-09/women-in-the-world-interview-madeleine-k-albright/?obref=obinsite&amp;referer=');">interviewed by Barbara Walters </a>during the rape panel. Albright was the first female U.S. Secretary of State and then-highest-ranking woman in the history of U.S. government. When she was a younger, Albright never thought she’d be serving in a presidential cabinet. During her interview, she said:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>I never thought that I would be able to be Secretary of State. It just never occurred to me, mainly – as I often put it – because I had never seen a Secretary of State in a skirt.</em></p></blockquote>
<p>We have hope, ladies! :-)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsmaker/women-in-the-world/" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.thedailybeast.com/newsmaker/women-in-the-world/?referer=');"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-445" title="Women In The World Summit Panelist" src="http://www.angellicayi.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/img-article-wiw-day-3-gallery-launch_161239989758.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="319" /></a></p>
<p>Following Albright’s interview, was Tina Brown who led the dialogue on “Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery.” Panel included: <a title="Luis CdeBaca" href="http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/biog/124083.htm" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/biog/124083.htm?referer=');">Luis CdeBaca </a>(Ambassador-At-Large to Monitor and Combat Trafficking Persons), <a title="The Daily Beast - Ending Human Slavery" href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-03-09/ending-human-slavery/?cid=tag:all1 " target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-03-09/ending-human-slavery/?cid=tag_all1&amp;referer=');">Dao Tuyet Lien</a> (former trafficking victim from Samoa), <a title="Sunitha Krishnan" href="http://sunithakrishnan.blogspot.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/sunithakrishnan.blogspot.com/?referer=');">Sunitha Krishnan </a>(Co-founder of <a title="Prajwala" href="http://www.prajwalaindia.com/home.html" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.prajwalaindia.com/home.html?referer=');">Prajwala</a>, Indian anti-trafficking organization), and Shoma Chaudhury (Managing Editor of <a title="Tehelka" href="http://www.tehelka.com/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.tehelka.com/?referer=');">Tehelka</a>, Indian news magazine that has published incisive investigations of the sex-trafficking industry).</p>
<p>I became interested in fighting against human trafficking during my undergrad Human Rights class taught by <a title="UC Berkeley - Professor Darren Zook" href="http://polisci.berkeley.edu/people/faculty/person_detail.php?person=277" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/polisci.berkeley.edu/people/faculty/person_detail.php?person=277&amp;referer=');">Professor Zook </a>at UC Berkeley in 2004. This is what triggered my passion to begin a career in federal law enforcement. According to the <a title="Human Trafficking - Frances Miko" href="http://fpc.state.gov/documents/organization/9107.pdf" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/fpc.state.gov/documents/organization/9107.pdf?referer=');">CRS Report for Congress by Frances Miko</a>, Specialist in International Relations, “Trafficking is now considered the third largest source of profits for organized crime, behind only drugs and guns, generating billions of dollars annually” (Miko, 2002).</p>
<p>In the New York Times special issue, “<a title="NY Times - Saving the World’s Women" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/23/magazine/23Women-t.html?pagewanted=3&amp;_r=1#" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.nytimes.com/2009/08/23/magazine/23Women-t.html?pagewanted=3_amp_r=1&amp;referer=');">Saving the World’s Women</a>” (I&#8217;ve used this article in my <a title="LeaderChic - Help Working Women" href="http://www.angellicayi.com/fight-poverty-help-working-women/" target="_blank">previous post</a> about helping working women), Nicholas Kristof says that the “International Labor Organization, a U.N. agency, estimates that at any one time there are 12.3 million people engaged in forced labor of all kinds.” In The Daily Beast article, “<a title="The Daily Beast - Ending Human Slavery" href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-03-09/ending-human-slavery/?cid=topic:originals3" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-03-09/ending-human-slavery/?cid=topic_originals3&amp;referer=');">Ending Human Slavery</a>,” a contributing writer says “about 70 percent of them are women or girls trafficked into sex slavery.”</p>

<p>Two weeks ago, on February 24th, I was one of six panelists (three were from government agencies and three from non-profit organizations) to speak at <a title="UC Berkeley " href="http://berkeley.edu/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/berkeley.edu/?referer=');">UC Berkeley’s </a>career panel, “Careers in Public Service and Non-Profit Organizations.” That same day and time of my event, 42nd President of the United States, <a title="William J Clinton Foundation" href="http://www.clintonfoundation.org/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.clintonfoundation.org/?referer=');">Bill Clinton</a>, was speaking on <a title="UC Berkeley - Bill Clinton" href="http://berkeley.edu/clinton/ " target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/berkeley.edu/clinton/?referer=');">“Global Citizenship: Turning Good Intentions into Positive Action”</a> at UC Berkeley as well. I had to compete against Bill Clinton? – “<em>Great</em>,” I thought. Surprisingly, we had a large turnout at our event. CAL undergrads’ enthusiastic approach to finding a career didn’t surprise me. Go bears!</p>
<p>Wednesday, April 28th, 6:00-8:00pm, UC Berkeley will be holding the event <a title="UC Berkeley - Career Speed Dating" href="https://berkeley-csm.symplicity.com/calendar/?ss=allevents&amp;_ksl=1&amp;s=" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/berkeley-csm.symplicity.com/calendar/?ss=allevents_amp_ksl=1_amp_s=&amp;referer=');">“Career Speed Dating: What’s Your Match?”</a> at the Alumni House on campus. Career Speed Dating is designed to help student s learn how to explore career options and network with professionals. <span id="more-438"></span>As an alum of Berkeley working in the federal government, <a title="UC Berkeley - Career Center" href="https://career.berkeley.edu/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/career.berkeley.edu/?referer=');">CAL’s career center </a>feel students could benefit greatly from hearing about our personal career experiences and getting our advice. Government jobs can be a mystery (I remember trying to navigate <a title="USAJOBS.GOV" href="http://usajobs.gov/" target="_blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/usajobs.gov/?referer=');">USAJobs </a>when I just a baby bear – it so stressful and confusing!).</p>
<p>The evening will begin with a brief introduction and presentation from the Career Center staff. Then, students will have the opportunity to meet with alumni in a “speed dating” format. Cute, isn’t it? There will be three 20-minute intervals during which small groups of students will hear us describe our work experience and will ask us questions about what we do and our profession in general. This exciting event gives students an opportunity to be introduced to and network with employers in a variety of industries. We’re expecting up to 30 Cal alumni and working professionals from a wide variety of career fields will be available for students to meet in a speed dating format, and up to 100 students to participate in this program.</p>
<p>What: Career Speed Dating: What’s Your Match?<br />
Where: Alumni House (on campus)<br />
Light refreshments and a parking space on campus will be provided</p>
<p>Learn if what we do is a fit for you too. Career fields represented include: Healthcare, Consulting, Finance, Human Resources Management, Law, Government, Transportation, Foreign Service / Diplomacy, Non Profit and Social Service, Theater / Drama, Video / Film, Gaming Industry, &#8230;and many more!</p>
