Life is an Adventure

I took this GORGEOUS picture during a road trip from GA to CA back in August 2008. I think this was taken when I was passing through AZ. Doesn’t it just make you smile and want to touch the sky?

Discovery

I found an old picture. I’ve never shown it to anyone except to my family and best friends. This picture takes me back to my childhood binoculars, stuffed animal explorer friend “Teddy” who I took with me to make discoveries (he sits on my bookshelf to this day), ingenious fictional stories I used tell the neighborhood kids, and more – it reminds me to never forget the importance of youth and aspirations.

Here I am with my fellow Special Agent trainees. Six out of 50 trainees in my class were females, including me. Imagine being the girliest and youngest female agent in a class full of Type-A personalities. Best. Experience. Ever.

Do you ever feel so strong about something that you’ll do anything in order to make it yours? I remember sitting on the couch with my baby brother and watching MacGyver when I was a kid. MacGyver was my idol – resourceful, optimistic, intelligent, and so sweet. Seriously, I considered marrying him without even thinking twice about our colossal age difference. Everyday, he was living a life of action, saving people, inventing, traveling, investigating, and making a positive change for everyone. Not only was I in love with his lifestyle and his encouraging ways, I also wanted to be him.

So, I did a little investigation myself: Who was MacGyver? -He was a Secret Agent. I had no idea what that meant since I was only a child. Becoming a Special Agent is what I aimed for all my life. Nothing else mattered; everything else was a distraction. My brother and I played “investigators and criminals” with the neighborhood kids quite often until the sun went down. Since we were children, I honestly believed that I was as an investigator, and in 2006, when I received an “unknown” call asking me for an answer of whether or not I could fly out to the east coast for the six-month training to become a Special Agent, I almost died. It was the moment I was waiting for all my life and everything made sense to me after that – go after dreams, make goals and have a plan, and always do the best I can.

Being ambitious doesn’t mean being competitive with others; it means being competitive with myself. I am constantly seeking out ways on how I can help others. That’s why I give myself such a hard time if I fail at something, but the reality is if I failed, then I’ve lived. Remember what Mother Teresa said? “Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest you.” Very true.

So, what’s the point of my story? – Go after that burning desire in your life because we need more people in this world who love what they do. If you reach a goal in life and it wasn’t all what you expected it to be, then move onto the next because life is about exploration. Set no limits and take the risk. Bear Grylls said it best when he tweeted, “If you risk nothing you gain nothing.” LOVE IT!!! LIVE IT!

Kanye’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” is Brilliant

Personally, yesterday was the perfect time for Kanye to come out with his fifth album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (November 22, 2010). Something about ambitious people makes me smile. I’m an extremely driven person and if you know me, then you know what I thrive on most – the attention, appreciation, and awards for accomplishments in life that were earned through hard work and dedication. I expect recognition and love praises. Some people disparage me and judge me as “too confident.” What can I say? I’m proud of myself and thankful for the people who have been there for me throughout good and bad times. Understanding there’s a fine line between arrogance and confidence, I hold all actions accountable. If you put everything you’ve got on the front line for something that you desire so bad, and you do everything you can in your power that results in you finally getting where you want to be, then who’s the one to judge? No one, but you. Kanye’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” is Brilliant continued »

RSA Animate – Changing Education Paradigms

I just finished the course in Leadership in Action for my Masters program and I must say that I am really enjoying how everything I learn in this program directly applies to everything I do at work and in my personal life. Fortunately, right after the Hatwalk 2010 Gala and meeting with James Kyson Lee, we connected on Facebook and I saw this video he posted from RSA Animate. I love it! Changing paradigms is the main focus from my past course. “This animate was adapted from a talk given at the RSA by Sir Ken Robinson, world-renowned education and creativity expert and recipient of the RSA’s Benjamin Franklin award.”

See RSA’s website about the history and what they’re about: “For over 250 years the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) has been a cradle of enlightenment thinking and a force for social progress.  Our approach is multi-disciplinary, politically independent and combines cutting edge research and policy development with practical action.”

La Dolce Vita

(Photo in courtesy of Tina Do of Bay Photo Group)

You must be the change you wish to see in the world. -Mahatma Gandhi

I’m going to have to apologize in advance- this blog post is going to be slightly longer than typical posts due to the extended period of time that I was unable to update. Thanks for understanding. A good friend of mine was visiting from Miami, FL last weekend and she said to me, “La Dolce Vita” while we were having a delicious dinner and tasty wine with close friends. The Italian saying translates to “The Sweet Life” or “The Good Life,” and it reminded me how we should view our lives and the world – to sweetness! xo, Angellica

On the night of August 6th (after an entire week off from work and graduate school), I came home with a crown and two sashes from the 25th Annual Miss Asian America Pageant. I made it on the royal court and I can assure you that it take a lot of time, effort, and skill. I would have never known that a beauty pageant took this much dedication and commitment! There were countless public speaking training sessions, dance practices, press conferences, sponsorship and charity events, political fundraisers, photo shoots, scheduled public appearances, interviews with news reporters, and many more. It takes a lot of ambition for an Asian American woman to dedicate a whole week out of school or work to prepare for this type of unconventional beauty pageant- a pageant representing the importance of individuality, culture, and leadership. Hence, I applaud you, Miss Asian America pageant contestants, for your diligence and positive attitude- you are all leaders, especially for all the young Asian American girls who are in search of confident and driven exemplars. You can see pictures of all the gorgeous ladies at David Yu’s website here.

As Miss. Scholastic and Miss. Popularity 2010-2011, I have attended over 11 community service events in less than two months. Volunteering once or twice a week for a three to seven hour period is a huge commitment, but it is an incredible and rewarding experience. I am lucky to have the opportunity to be part of such a fantastic organization. La Dolce Vita continued »

Be a Leader – beHUMAN

I can’t believe it’s already been two months since I was selected as a finalist for this year’s 25th Annual Miss Asian America Pageant. Please join me this Saturday, August 7th, at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre in San Francisco. Doors open at 6pm. You’ll find more information about this black tie event by visiting Miss Asian America. I am proud to represent the Korean American community! I will continue to bring awareness to the dangers of human trafficking by mentoring youth on a weekly basis and working as a team leader for non-profits. I’m usually mentoring students in creating their own school clubs or organizations related to bringing awareness to causes, including human trafficking.

The G(irls)20 Summit: WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER?

“There are 3.3 billion girls and women.  What’s your number? Get your unique, and randomly generated number, and be a voice to empower girls and women all over the world.”

I received some emails asking me why I posted random numbers on my Facebook profile and Twitter page. For the past few weeks, people all over the world have been posting random numbers. These posts aren’t a random occurrence; they definitely mean something and you can join in on this awesome grassroots initiative too.

So, what are these numbers? They are from the ground-breaking initiative, The G(irls)20 Summit, created by the Belinda Stronach Foundation. On June 26-27, 2010, there will be a G20 Summit where G20 leaders will gather in Toronto to discuss measures to promote global financial stability and ways to achieve a sustainable economic growth and development. The G(irls)20 Summit, scheduled for June 16-18, 2010, will precede the official G20 Summit in Toronto this year. The Republic of Korea, G20 Chair for 2010, will host the fifth summit in November in Seoul.

Women in the World Summit 2010

Last week, my mom emailed me an article from The Korea Times. She knows how much I love leadership, especially when women’s rights and human rights are involved. I’ve been meaning to write about this Women’s conference awhile ago, but didn’t get the chance to do so until today. It is an article about the conference on empowering women across the globe, “Women in the World Summit,” which was held at a theater in Manhattan over the weekend beginning March 12th through March 14th.

As Jocelyn Noveck’s Huffington Post article shares, there were “prominent women” from all around the world, including:

A secretary of state. A top presidential adviser. An iconic film star. Fashion designers, TV anchors, and a queen… But they weren’t the stars of the event. It was the women’s rights and human rights activists…who drew the cheers, and sometimes tears, at “Women in the World: Stories and Solutions,” a gathering organized by Tina Brown, editor of The Daily Beast Web site, as they talked about how women have progressed and what remains to be done.

New Political World: Final Vote Passes Health Care Bill

Something huge happened yesterday: Americans woke up this morning surrounded by a new political world. President Obama said in a statement after the vote yesterday, “This is what change looks like.” He’s right – this is the most significant congressional vote in the last four decades. Before the vote, one side of the aisle gave a standing ovation to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) while the other side stayed silent.

“It is with great humility and with great pride that we tonight will make history for our country and progress for the American people,” said Pelosi. New Political World: Final Vote Passes Health Care Bill continued »

Career Speed Dating: What’s Your Match?

Two weeks ago, on February 24th, I was one of six panelists (three were from government agencies and three from non-profit organizations) to speak at UC Berkeley’s career panel, “Careers in Public Service and Non-Profit Organizations.” That same day and time of my event, 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton, was speaking on “Global Citizenship: Turning Good Intentions into Positive Action” at UC Berkeley as well. I had to compete against Bill Clinton? – “Great,” I thought. Surprisingly, we had a large turnout at our event. CAL undergrads’ enthusiastic approach to finding a career didn’t surprise me. Go bears!

Wednesday, April 28th, 6:00-8:00pm, UC Berkeley will be holding the event “Career Speed Dating: What’s Your Match?” at the Alumni House on campus. Career Speed Dating is designed to help student s learn how to explore career options and network with professionals. Career Speed Dating: What’s Your Match? continued »
